Earth Day 22nd April 2023 - Invest In Our Planet
The upcoming Earth Day is a significant milestone for environmentalists worldwide, marking the 53rd anniversary of the modern environmental movement. Every year, individuals from over 190 countries unite on April 22nd to take action towards a more sustainable future for our planet.
A bit of history:
The first Earth Day was held on 22nd April 1970, when San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson separately asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration. Dealing with dangerously serious issues concerning toxic drinking water, air pollution, and the effects of pesticides, an impressive 20 million Americans—10% of the population—ventured outdoors and protested together.
President Richard Nixon led the nation in creating the Environmental Protection Agency, which followed with successful laws including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act.
Today, we face a host of challenges that are more complex and daunting than ever before. With natural disasters on the rise, extreme weather patterns becoming more frequent, and global temperatures continuing to climb, it can be hard to imagine how any one person, let alone an entire population, could possibly make a difference. Despite these challenges, however, we must remain steadfast in our commitment to finding solutions and taking action.
It's crucial to recognise that each one of us has the power to make a difference, no matter where we are or what we do, we all have a role to play in protecting our planet and ensuring a better future for generations to come.
We must all take responsibility and invest in the protection of our planet - every day!
Here are some helpful tips for you:
Go solar.
Choosing solar power over burning fossil fuels is a wise and eco-friendly decision. Solar power is a sustainable and efficient way to generate energy, and it's high time we start utilising it to combat the environmental issues we face. By harnessing the power of the sun, we can make a positive contribution towards a greener future. It's not just about saving money, it's about saving our planet.
Switch to reusable bags.
Let's make a positive change for the environment by switching to reusable bags. It's a simple yet impactful action that we can take. Make it a habit to always have a reusable bag with you by placing them in a visible and accessible spot. It's alarming to know that globally, it is estimated that we use around 4 trillion plastic bags annually, with an average of only using them for 10-20 minutes! By getting into the habit, we reduce the amount of plastic waste that ends up in our landfills and oceans.
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
Opt for quality and long-lasting products over disposable ones to save money and protect the environment. Single-use items may seem convenient, but they have a lasting impact on our planet. Take responsibility for your plastic waste by properly disposing of items you no longer need and replacing them with sustainable alternatives.
Turn off the lights when not in use.
Use environmentally friendly cleaning products.
Use a reusable water bottle.
Buy local food.
Let’s take care of the Earth for the future of our children. Let's work together to create a greener, more equitable future for generations to come.
We only have one Earth!
