MEETING YOUR NEEDS WITH RENEWABLE ENERGY
The output of a wind turbine is dependent upon the speed of the wind. It is very important to understand that small differences in the wind speed mean large differences in output. This is because the output of a wind turbine is proportional to the ‘cube of the wind speed’. If the wind speed doubles, the power output increases by a factor of eight.
The Department of Business, Innovation and Skills has a wind-speed database where an estimate of the wind speed anywhere in the United Kingdom can be obtained.
It is important to be aware that the results are only an approximation based on a 1km2 grid and are not necessarily an accurate reflection of the actual wind-speed in any location.
Information should be used for guidance purposes only. The only way to gain an accurate reflection of the performance of a wind turbine is to measure the wind-speed at the proposed location for a minimum of six months.
